I don’t have much firsthand experience with Vice Presidents of the United States.
There are just two that I have heard in person. The first was Spiro Agnew at the Kane County Fairgrounds in Illinois in September, 1973. My father-in-law, a staunch Republican who was the elected Kane County Clerk took me to see him. Having completed my active duty in the Army I can say that I detested Nixon and Agnew by then. It was not a memorable speech in any way - he ranted on and on about how the press was evil and the “silent majority” favored their Vietnam war policies. If I had had a Bullshit Flag then I would have thrown it.
A short time later Spiro Agnew resigned as Vice President of the United States on October 10, 1973. His resignation came amid charges of extortion, bribery, and income tax violations related to his time as Governor of Maryland. For a more complete picture about Agnew see Bag Man.
Almost exactly 51 years later I got to shake the hand of the next Vice President of the United States, Minnesota’s Governor Tim Walz in Superior Wisconsin…
Wow! What a difference! Hope! Joy! Hard Work! For a better future for all Americans (yes, he reported to all of us there that Kamala had pointed to all the red hat wearing protesters in Pennsylvania and said them too)!
Personally I’m still pretty much in the Chicks Not Ready to Make Nice mode with the red hat group. Unless they are members of the 1% most wealthiest Americans there is simply no RATIONAL REASON to support Donald Trump! None.
To his credit retired Command Sergeant Major Walz, suggested ways to engage with the Trump yard sign folks over freedom to make your own decisions about who to love, women’s reproductive care, their children’s and grand children’s education, global warming, etc.
A joyful boisterous knowledgeable crowd of all ages. He pointed out that 1600 of us in attendance might be described as AI created by the other side but that there won’t be anything AI about our votes in November. Here’s a short news story and video worth watching.
All in all a very uplifting afternoon. There were other speakers, all good - Gwen Walz, the English Teacher is a dynamic speaker for sure! Great local music as well. If you get an opportunity to attend one of these events I hope that you will go…
And that’s the way it is.
